Who’s last name should our son have?

My boyfriend and I are expecting in October. He has a daughter from a previous relationship and she has his name. We just found out last week we are having a boy! We are both thrilled. We have chosen his name but my boyfriend is stuck on giving him his last name after asking him countless times if I can give him mine since it is less common and we only have one male in my family able to pass it on. His family is ALL males with the exception of his daughter and they all have his last name. His last name is also SUPER common. I would really love to give our son my name to carry on someday. His first and middle name are family names for my boyfriend so I wanted to at least give him a part of me too. I did tell my boyfriend if we ever get married we can both change our names to his but I’m not entirely stuck on that happening any time soon. I do understand this is his first and maybe only son and that he would like to give him his name but I think my reasoning is fair. I wouldn’t mind giving him both only it would make for a VERY long last name lol. Mine has 10 letters and his has 7. And they don’t sound very good together.

I think he should have your last name. I always think it makes more sense for the mother and child to have the same last name.

You aren’t even engaged & aren’t sure about marriage in your future. His daughter has his last name & he’s not with the daughter’s mother. I’m sure it’s a pain for her to have a different last name than her daughter, just as it would be with you & your son.
Aside from this, you want to pass your less common family name down. Your boyfriend seems to have gotten his way with the first & middle names. He also got his way with his first child. I think your reasoning & COMPROMISE of changing both last names if/when you get married is more than fair. He doesn’t seem to be too familiar with compromise.
You aren’t married, so it’s completely your decision (as I’m sure you know). I think it’s set up that way for a reason. I gave my son my last name, even though I actually don’t like it & prefer his dad’s over mine. I’m so glad I did, especially now that he’s 5.5 & hasn’t seen or heard from his dad in over a year.

Yours hands down. He needs to compromise. He can’t have the baby 100% named after his family. It’s your child too and that’s selfish of him to do.

You could put both. Just list yours first! I think your reasoning makes perfect sense and the marriage point is another really good thing to say too but I would keep the baby with both last names anyways just because it’s special to your family to carry on the family name! Like you said he has plenty of males in his family to carry the name and pass it along to your children, your family doesn’t have the same options. At the end of the day it’s your decision! If he doesn’t like it he can push out his own baby and name it whatever he wants 🤷‍♀️

i have my mother's last name. i'm really happy i don't have my dads because it's very common and my mother's is not. i'm bulgarian so my last night is pretty cool and i haven't met anyone else with it besides family!

If you plan on getting married it would be a waste of time to give him your name now and change it down the road.

If you both want to use your last name, go for it. My SO and I used my last name for our son, mainly because it flowed with his first name better but also his family is all males and mine is all females so it was cool to be able to continue the family name. Whenever we have a second baby we’ll probably use his last name.
