How does the flight work with 1 year olds?

Question

Are 1 year olds allow on the plane and do I bring the car seat? How exactly does that work? I'm thinking about taking trip to Atlanta Georgia for several days in August.

but the baby a seat! it's the only safe option. You wouldn't let a one year old ride in a car without a carseat, so he/she should be in one on a plane as well

Former Airline employee here. 
If you do bring your carseat for use in the plane, verify it is FAA approved prior to your flight just in case the gate agent/flight attendant is required to check. Most don't care, but there are some by the books agents out there.

We took our son when he was 11 months to Disney. He sat on my lap during the flight. I brought a car seat and checked it with his stroller that way I would have the car seat once we got to Florida ( In hind site I didn't need to bring it, every uber we took had a car seat). Just make sure when you book your seat you add him to your ticket, he will he free.

kids should always be in a car seat in a airplane. you can check out car seats for the littles facebook page and website for car seat recommendations when flying.. NEVER BAG CHECK  a car seat, they are thrown and treated like luggage and get damaged weakening the seat

I think the rule is that once they turn two they HAVE TO have their own seat. Before that, they can sit in your lap if you want, but it’s safer to get them their own seat and bring an FAA approved car seat for the plane.

I took my son on a couple flights when he was 16 months old. He was free to fly on my lap so we did that. He wasn’t horrible but if I had to do it over again I’d buy him his own seat and bring the car seat, especially since I have an easily transported seat. He was just super hyper and wriggly during one of the flights and was driving me crazy, it would’ve been easier if I could strap him into his seat. The other flight he slept the whole time.

I prefer to purchase my son his own seat and he uses his car seat on the plane. It is the safest option and I personally find it easier. He doesn’t mind being in his car seat, he often falls asleep on the flights and I much prefer having my hands free and a seat to myself. 
If you choose the lap baby route instead, pretty much all airlines will check a car seat for free. Gate checking reduces the odds of the seat being damaged, but either way you should thoroughly check your seat afterwards. Baggage handlers are notoriously careless.

I just checked my car seat (if you need it once you’re there) in a padded travel bag and brought baby on as a lap child. They are free if you don’t get them their own seat.
