Neither. Parenting doesn't come with a handbook because what works for my family won't necessarily work for another's family. Sure, there are books with guidelines and ideas and theories, but none of it is absolute.

This comment makes my blood boil to be honest. It is a root for a lot of ignorance to grow. It is a can of worms tbh. Most the people are not even educated on the matter, what is Eastern? How many countries are there in the East? Arabic peninsula and the Gulf States, China, South east asia? The west is not as diverse, most places like Europe, Canada, US are all pretty much alike. Latin America, Caribbeans are not exactly the same but quite similar to the West in some aspects.

Whatever leaves your kid happy, healthy and well adjusted. 🤷🏽♀️

There's no handbook for parenting on West and east. Both have very diverse countries with a lot of different parenting styles. I can't even begin explaining how this question makes no sense at ALL.

I read through your comments and I don’t think you are very clear in what you are asking. You seem to be making a lot of generalizations and assumptions based on stereotypes. I’ve lived in the Middle East and where I was, education was not really emphasized, nor was working hard, due to the ultimate subsidization of the local population by the government. Parenting styles were much more permissive here and children were very much allowed to “be children” and family was very much at the forefront of life there. It seems to me you are comparing authoritarian vs permissive parenting styles more than anything else. Are you asking if there is a benefit to forcing children to master a variety of subjects in an effort to make them become successful? I suppose, it’s a formula that can lead to high wages if that’s the goal. In countries with high levels of wage disparity and poverty, one can see why parents would push and push and push their children on this path. However, from a US perspective, I can’t speak to various European countries, we do value individualism (sometimes to our detriment) and ingenuity. Creative thinking leads to innovation and innovation drives humanity forward. I saw some comment you made about western parents not encouraging mastery through struggle and I don’t know that that’s true. I think it’s hard to parse out the specifics of what you mean about the differences in cultures (and which cultures, east and west are very vague) unless you have something more concrete to say. It’s pretty well known that a combination of drive, a strong work ethnic, and creativity are a recipe for success and happiness. I think we’d all like people to pursue, if they are able, what speaks to them, what is a use of their particular talents and intellect. This is how we make happy productive people.

I really don’t think it’s that simple. There are multiple parenting styles and I don’t believe it can be simplified and generalized between East and West. It’s more complex than that.

Parents have their own style. Can we stop comparing one to the other and stop judging?

There is so much diversity in East and West that this question is unanswerable. The way kids are raised in Finland is way different than the UK. Similarly the way kids are raised in the Pacific Islands are way different than Japan. Countries in Africa and the Middle East are considered either east or west so where do they fall? Are you referring to a specific book or article? Please be more specific.
