How many years are car seats good for??

So I got a hand me down car seat. I was told theres an expiration date on it but all I could find was the manufactured date which was in 2011. How many years are they good for?? Should I just stick to getting a new car seat and stroller altogether since is been 7 years??

For a car seat that’s 7yrs old I would defo buy a new one especially as car seat change safety wise, it’s worth making sure you got a up to date car seat with new safety features. Pushchairs it doesn’t really matter tho.

I read somewhere that car seats are typically good for about six years after the manufacturing date. If there is a serial number or model number somewhere on it you could try google and see if more info pops up on that particular model.

Yes, they do expire due to being exposed to heat while in the car and wear from general use. I believe most expire after 7 to 10 years after the manufacturing date. It depends on the brand I think.

I would always buy a new car seat. That’s just something you shouldn’t get second hand. You never know what has happened. I believe it’s good for five years or by expiration date. You can google the car seat number a find out the date it expires.

I got one that was a hand me down. It was never used because they were moving. I don’t use it though because we got a brand new one for our baby. But it’ll come in use when the second is born

Depends on the seat. Pumpkin seats are usually good for about 3-4 years. If it’s something like a Graco 4Ever seat they are made differently so they’re good for about 10 years. Personally I would not use a 7 year old seat with an infant. Look for a program that recycles them like at buy, buy baby. You can usually get a discount on a new one by bringing in the old one.

Google the seat or call the manufacturer with the date of manufacture and they can tell you. Though you really should always buy a new seat. A seat that old is close to expiration if not already expired anyway. (Expiration May be stamped in the plastic itself on the bottom). Seats that covers haven’t been washed properly, straps have gotten soaked, or have been in an accident are not safe. That’s why it’s best to always just buy new. There is no expiry the main thing is has it been in a crash. If it’s been in a crash the plastic is weakened and will not protect as before,
