can it be stopped?

so last Friday my husband surprised me with a puppy. she adored the kids and would let them touch her. my kids are rough and I been working on them with it. they have been nipped at a few times when she is chewing on her bone and they try to take it away. my niece can still touch her and she's okay. all my kiddos gotta do is go sit next to her, go by her, and she's growling at them. my oldest has.. no fear and my youngest just doesn't understand yet that not all growling is playful. the oldest is 4 and the youngest is 2. she does come from the bully and German breed. she's mixed.

Well, you have to teach the kids to be very gentle. I work in rescue and there have been plenty of perfectly good dogs that are brought back because they have nipped at a child. And when asking the parents further, the kid was pulling the dogs ears or jumped on it or something.
Also, when the kids are around and don’t let the dog have a bone or treat. Even if a dog is it treat possessive, a child running at them or trying to grab it may make them.

Your puppy will end up biting one of the kids if they don’t learn to give it the space it needs especially when chewing a bone. Nipping is normal for puppies as they’re teething and the dog will need plenty of chew toys for to help satisfy the natural urge to chew. I would recommend considering a training class so the kids can come to it and learn from a trainer.

My dogs are trained that their crates are their bedrooms and personal safe space. When the nieces and nephews come through they can escape to their crates.  The kids were told that if the dog is in there to leave them alone. We plan to teach our daughter this as well and my stepkids know it too.

Kids need to be told any growling is not playful. You need to create a safe space for the dog away from the kids and slowly introduce them with very supervised interactions. In that safe space you can give the dog a bone. If the dog growls the kids need to move away right away, that is the only way the dog can warn...if your kids are not able to understand that you may need to bring the dog back and wait a bit or get an older, trained dog. It’s not fair to the dog or kids to put them in situations where either may feel unsafe. We have an 11 year old dog and there are very clear rules with our 3 year old. The dog knows she has to be gentle with him and we will protect her, by warning her to move or stopping him from being too smothering. If he does something she doesn’t like, like touch her tail, he is told to leave her alone..he would never be allowed to pick her up, it’s not fair to her to expect to be tortured. Please get training and create strong boundaries if you plan to keep the dog.

we just dont let our puppy have a bone while the kiddo is around. he doesn't care if my son grabs his other toys, but dogs get protective over their bones
