Balayage with virgin roots??

Question

I never dyed my hair before but I want to try something new. 
Q: Can you get a balayage without dying your roots (so when I let my hair grow out it will be undamaged again like my virgin hair)? Or do you need to dye your whole hair to make the colors blend together? 
My hair is very healthy right now so i don't want to start bleaching my whole hair (it's dark so if I want to dye my hair it has to be bleached). So is it possible to dye my hair without my roots?? I don't know much about this lol 🤷🏻‍♀️

Yes the first time I got a balayage done was the first time I ever put any color on my hair.

I mean I think it depends where you want it to start? If you don’t want your rootsdone, you could just ask them to dye further down
