Stop excusing men as idiots because they're not (usually)

Momma of 4

So I have a vent: sometimes when I'm out running an errand alone, people can tell I have kids (eg I'm at the grocery store and I'm buying kid snacks or baby supplies) and I often get comments like "oh you have kids? Well....if you're here....then WHO IN THE WORLD is watching your children??" Ummm they have a father. And when I say this, they're shocked and are like "wow you're SO LUCKY what a GREAT MAN, my husband won't even change diapers and I can't leave him with my kids"....or they assume I must be divorced and it's his weekend.

Seriously? A grown ass adult can't keep his own children alive for an hour while you run to the store? They'd probably be less surprised if I told them that the neighbor's 12 year old child is watching them!

It's a shame that sexism is still so prominent and that women even tolerate things like the father of their child refusing to change diapers or watch his own children, and that people can't fathom who could possibly be with the kids if mom is somewhere without them! And he gets a trophy just for being a responsible adult for an hour on a Sunday afternoon, meanwhile I have them all week and get zero appreciation (I'm talking about from people in general, my husband is actually pretty hands on and not a man-baby about it)

I just feel like society has a lot of work to do on our expectations as men's role in the family. Stop assuming they're idiots and have it be the norm that of course they contribute to caring for their own children!
