When to test?

I’ve noticed that quite a few ladies here wait days after period is due to test. Is that to insure a larger amount of the hormones are there? Also, how long can you go without a period and still get a neg and be pregnant? With my first I knew I was pregnant but never got a positive home preg test so I’m hoping when it does finally happen again (first month trying after a miscarriage last year) so I won’t be stressed and disappointed when I don’t get a positive if it’s common to have negatives from the first week missed period.

It's not super common but some women will never get a positive home pregnancy test and some don't get a positive until 6 weeks+.

so 14dpo is pretty standard. or first day of missed period because the average for implantation is 9-12dpo and you can pick up that hormone 1-2 days later. 
pregnancy tests catch 40% of pregnancies before a period. 99% first day and 99.9 by one week late.
however 75% of miscarriages or chemical pregnancies happen in that late period window.
I prefer to wait a week because I don't want a positive and then be heartbroken a few days later. 
some people test at like a week before and stress over non existent lines.

Some women wait sometime after af is due to make sure their period isn’t just late. I’ve had a period as late as a month which was odd because I have regular periods.
