My mom would always shove as much as she could into 1 day & make it REALLY stressful & unenjoyable for everyone. I like to just research before we go and then just see what sounds good while we are there

We focus more on activities. I don’t get the point of spending thousands to go on vacation and lay around the entire time and never do anything when I can do that for free at home 🤷🏼‍♀️
So, we pick ‘stereotypical’ activities for each area we go (so think of, say, Cancun. You think snorkeling, ancient ruins, ect) And then activities we enjoy doing (fishing is one of our regular hobbies, so we’ve booked deep sea fishing day trips on vacation before, ect), and then build an itinerary. We schedule about half the time as ‘free days’ where we can do whatever we want (wander around freely, sightsee, things we didn’t think of booking, museums, ect) and then the other half of the time we do 1 booked/scheduled activity a day. 
After following this plan for a couple vacations we’ve found our balance between being occupied/having fun, and having time to ‘breathe’ during the trip so that we feel like we’ve seen/done what we want to for each destination without being overwhelmed and can leave happy and then comfortably move on to a new place for the next trip
