Queasy when breastfeeding in the middle of the night?

My daughter is 4 weeks old and for the past several nights I’ve noticed that when I wake up in the middle of the night to feed her, I do not feel good at all. On top of being tired, I get a really uncomfortable feeling in my breast that I can’t really explain other than uncomfortable, and I get a super queasy feeling like nauseous. It gets to be that towards the end of her feeding I feel anxious and rushed because I just want her to be done already so it can just be over with. Is this normal? I don’t really notice any other symptoms.

A lot of women get what's called Dysphoric Milk Ejection Reflex (D-MER). It's basically a dramatic shift in hormone levels usually right when you let down & can continue throughout the feeding. A common symptom of if is nausea. Definitely get anything that helps you personally with the nausea & know that it's just that, a simple hormone change during feeding. I would always use iced water & cheerios to help with my nausea during feedings. If you have some peppermint oil, that's always good for nausea too.

For the nausea, maybe try putting a snack next to the feeding area? When I was still feeding my son multiple times at night I would feel the same way at some point. I always fed him in the rocking chair in his room, (even though his crib was in our room, I fed him in there to keep him used to his room for an easier transition) and I have a little end table next to the chair. Before bed I’d put a drink there and a snack of some kind- chips, crackers, a cookie, whatever. Then after I got him situated I’d snack and 9/10 times it did make me feel better.

I had this too, along with my face itching. It wasn’t DMER, it was straight up breastfeeding aversion. It passed after about 6 weeks. It was awful.
Do whatever you can to distract yourself—watch Netflix while you nurse, read a book, do something that distracts your brain.

I get super anxious when I nurse. I BF my first for 18mo and my second is now 5mo and it’s always happened with both of them  I always need water! I can’t eat while I’m nursing, I’ve tried and my stomach just feels so icky that I can’t do it so I always make sure I have water or juice with me. From what I’ve heard it’s pretty normal, it’s like when I have a migraine, nursing my LO makes it 100x worse. 😕

Some women when they let down go into more of a tight or flight mode rather than get a warm tingly feeling. That may be what you are experiencing 😢
