The foundation to protecting hair is having healthy hair, deep conditioning, scalp massages, oils, eating right, drinking water, and your hair will flourish while choosing whatever style you want.

I been natural for about 5 years, and finally reached waist length! The first 2 years I did Marley twists a lot. It really helped with retention but also did my edges in. My hair started really flourishing when I wore my natural hair. What really helps me is deep conditioning regularly, keeping my hair moisturized daily, co-washing frequently and only using shampoo when I have product build up but using apple cider vinegar as a great alternative to shampoo I would use that maybe once or twice a month. Yeah I’m getting a little winded in sum wearing your hair out is perfectly fine for retention, contrary to popular belief you don’t “need” to protective style to grow your hair.

Wigs, or twists, and hairstyles that keep your ends tucked/coveted.

I would say alternate. Wear wigs or get extensions for a period of time then let your natural hair breath for a while then go back. That’s how I’ve seen it work. Well for African Americans. I say that because when your hair is braided, it grows. Anytime you give your natural hair a break that’s always good!
