cervix checks

I see a lot of posts on here with women saying they're 1 or 2 cm dilated already & I'm just curious why their doctor is doing cervix checks? I asked my doctor if I'm having one done and she said no that baby comes when he comes. I want to be sure I'm not missing out! I want to know if I'm dilated too!!
