I've never used the Medela pump, but I have own the Ameda Purely Yours and do not recommend it whatsoever. It is super painful, doesn't come close to emptying me at all and takes forever for me to get a let down. 
I ended buying both the Spectra S1 and S2 (the S2 I bought to replace the Ameds two years ago and the S1 I bought during my last pregnancy). 
The Spectra is 10000% better and so worth the money if insurance doesn't cover it. I'm able to get, wait for it... 5 OUNCES in TWO MINUTES! I pump twice a day at work, and get a total of 20 ounces. It's super gentle, very customizable, I'm able to get 3 letdowns in a short period of time between each one, it's quiet, and empties me in a reasonable amount of time. I couldn't recommend the Spectra enough!
