Tackling Misconceptions - Discrimination, Racism and Hatred in Islam.

Xig • In the honourable words of Howard Moon - "I`m the fighter, you little tit-box."

‘Death to the unbelievers, destroy the homosexuals, etc.’ It’s words such as these, spoken by non-Muslims regarding what they believe to be Islamic beliefs, that have triggered this topic.

This post is a brave one, I am aware. But this is one that bothers me a lot. I have heard many non-Muslims suggest that Muslims just want to kill anyone that isn’t Muslim. That Muslims require the whole world to believe in what Muslims believe, or ‘war shall be waged upon them.’ I’ve heard non-Muslims mention similar beliefs about Muslims, against members of lgbt community. I’ve also come across comments that suggest that Muslims believe that white people are inferior to other races. There are many more accusations that are made against Muslims.

In my opinion, part of the problem lies within Muslim communities - I cannot pretend that Muslims who hold some of these ideologies do not exist. Cultural and societal values very often override religious values. So there can unfortunately be elements of negativity dotted around within the Muslim community, as a result. I’ve created this post, I guess, to bring focus to the fact that hatred, anger, discrimination and poor treatment of others are not qualities or habits that a Muslim should carry. Nor are they qualities that Islam encourages.

So, if you will, share your views on the topic. Here are some questions you may want to consider.

Do you have any personal experience with issues regarding discrimination or racism at the hands of Muslims?

What kind of character does Islam encourage?

Have you ever found yourself, or witnessed those around you, treating others in a negative manner in the name of Islam?

Do you feel that some kinds of discrimination are justified? If so, please elaborate on this respectfully.

It seems as though so many non-Muslims believe that Muslims carry the idea that ‘Islam must conquer the world.’ Must it?

Is a Muslim superior to a non Muslim?

⚠️ I started this post by mentioning that it’s a brave one, because we all inevitably have different views and unfortunately some of those views could be harmful to others. Which is why I’ve been incredibly reluctant to mention this topic. But I also believe that it’s a very important topic to address. So I urge everyone to discuss this with honesty, in a completely respectful manner, please.
