Parental Support Control

Julia • Psychologist in Training at TSCPP

I’m going to keep this short..

I’m a grown adult, finishing up with my college years, moving on with my career - my parents and I have always been extremely close... However, I believe they have a control problem.

I no longer agree with the way I was raised and because I’ve chosen a different path they don’t agree with, they have given me a literal contract of rules and expectations I have to comply with or they will no longer be in support of my life. I respect them, but I also respectfully disagree with what they think my life should look like..

Since I’m in college, I’ve stayed home, trying to save up for when I graduate this Spring.

It seems my only option left is to get out and move into my own place, where we can live whatever life we have chosen, then we will be able to live in harmony apart from one another.

Thoughts from any of you on this topic?

I’m struggling, desperately trying not to get angry and need a little unbiased advice.
