Condoms are 98% (or more) effective when used properly. There are tons of videos and articles out there on the proper way to apply a condom & common human errors that compromise their effectiveness. I would definitely suggest watching/reading a few whether you or your partner thinks they know how to put on a condom or not. You should also check your condom after sex EVERY TIME for leaks or tears so you can determine if emergency contraceptive is needed. I also pair with spermacidal lubricant and the withdrawal method for additional protection. You can also track your cycle and try to avoid sex during ovulation where the likelihood of pregnancy is much greater.
