Why do they take my blood?

Question

I had 4 or 5 vials of blood drawn at my 8 week appointment but the doctor/nurse never told me why. What are they looking for in blood tests at your first prenatal appointment?

They look for your blood group, full blood count, HIV, hepatitis, any STDs, iron levels and thyroid function. Probably other stuff too.

Mine drew 12 vials at 8 week appt. crazy right?! I am very healthy and do not take medications or have any health issues. Just standard practice I guess. From the report they gave me it was basically a very thorough blood analysis (CBC, metabolic function, blood type etc.). They also run a few tests to look for chromosomal abnormalities.
