Should sex offenders be allowed to have their name removed from the register?

Or

I watched a debate this morning on whether they should have the right to appeal. This looks at those who are on it for life.

Just for clarification, this is not about those who are convicted for indecent exposure/peeing in public, but offences against children or serious sexual offences.

An investigation found that in the last 6 years, two thirds of people successfully managed to get their names removed in the UK. Over 130 in England alone.

The person arguing in favour stated:

- its their right and it’s offered after 15 years for adults, 8 for juveniles

- everyone is entitled to redemption

- victims are consulted beforehand

- if there is a hint of a threat, their application will be declined (thorough checks are performed)

The person arguing against stated:

- the register is there for protection

- they may reoffend/are still a risk

- it’s not the court who decide, but the police

- they should not be allowed to “get away” with their crimes

- no sympathy for the victim(s) their feelings are disregarded if they oppose but are still granted removal

I just wanted to know what you all think about this?

I apologise for grammatical errors. My phone is developing it’s own brain.
