Mamas who had an epidural during birth: did medical staff turn off the epidural so you’d feel the pushing process? If so, were you aware this was going to happen?

My epidural never really took.... at first I was feeling great. Then the pain came back and as much at they tried, it never worked again. So I felt it all. It was still an amazing experience and I am considering trying natural for baby 2. 
But I’m also a big fan of not feeling the pain so I may give in and try it again. Lol 😂

With 2 of my vaginal births, 1 left it as is. With my 2nd, the dr (different dr) shut it off completely and didn't tell me. I was pretty pissed. He did it because my son's heart rate was starting to not look good so baby had to come out quickly, but I thought he should have told me instead of just doing it.

An epidural is just a shot, it only makes the pain in your lower half more bearable.

I’m a labor and delivery nurse. On my floor if you are 10 cm for over a hour and aren’t feeling an urge to push we cut the epidural in half so that you get the urge. We don’t turn it off though.

For me it just made the contractions less painful. It was in the while time and I could feel pressure when it was time to push so I knew when to push

They turned mine off when I was dilated to a 9. I had no idea they were going to do it. It was very traumatic. I told them I was under the impression I’d have it the duration after getting it and I didn’t want it turned off. The midwife said it was her policy and ignored me. I pushed out a 10.2 pound baby 3 hours later. I went from 0 pain to level 10 pain in an instant, then 3 hours of it and pushing out a huge baby, which led to a bad tear has left me so scared to have a 2nd baby. (I’m the one who made this poll. I wanted to see if anyone else experienced this to see if it’s common and likely to happen to me again. Thanks so much for all your input and keep it coming :)
