I'm fairly new to all of this, and out of all of the topics me and me S.O. have discussed this is kinda the one I'm most worried of screwing up, anyone have suggestions?

Squeeze the sides. Have a code for when he's doing it to hard, like tapping on his arm.

When you wrap your hand around their neck (or them yours) gently squeeze the outside of the neck and avoid putting pressure in the middle of the neck.
