When to tell employer ?!

Hey! This is my first baby and I’m already stressing about work and being let go or replaced since I am a non tenured teacher . When is everyone planning on telling their employers ? I was thinking right after the first trimester is over but I’m not sure if I’m supposed to know exactly how long I’ll be on maternity leave got to tell my principal . I would love to be out at least a year but it will all be unpaid and I’m not sure if we can afford for me to be out a whole year . Any advice would be appreciated .

So, I would look into your states legal maternity leave policies. In TN I can take 16 weeks and my employer legally has to hold my position. Pretty sure there’s no where in the states that is legally required to hold your position for a year unfortunately. :( the states have a long way to go in terms of maternity leave unfortunately for us.

I was teaching with my first and I honestly didn’t discuss it until past 6 months. I had just started to show at this point. I stressed it though way more than I needed to. 
You can wait till you’re showing if that is comfortable for you. Or sooner. It’s a happy thing though and they won’t/ legally can’t be mad about it

I think it depends on your situation. I've been doing fertility treatments so my boss already knew so she understood why I was going to the Dr's so often. I told her as soon as I found out, because it directly affects my job. I work at an animal shelter, so being pregnant limits some of the things that I can do. If you notice that your pregnancy is affecting your job, I would go ahead and let your boss know. Good luck.

I told at about 5 weeks but I am very symptomatic in my pregnancy and I work 12 hour shifts as a nurse. My bosses have been very understanding, though I’m not in an area where I could be stopped from a promotion as that’s not an option for me at this time.

I told my boss when I was only 4 weeks. My reasoning was my increased need to pee and that in my occupation we are monitored for every bathroom break we take. I can normal only have like 2 and I work 10 hour shifts

With my last pregnancy I told my employer basically right away after we had our first US and saw the heartbeat. 
Unfortunately this held me back from a promotion. I was under the impression that my boss, who’s a woman and had children working in her position, wouldn’t discriminate against me. That obviously wasn’t the case.
Sadly the pregnancy ended in miscarriage, but I did receive the promotion about a week after my miscarriage. I’m currently expecting again (no cycle after the miscarriage) and I will not be telling my boss until 12 weeks. Three of my coworkers know but only because they’re my backups and I’ve been a bit of an emotional wreck still healing from the loss.

I told my boss right away at 6 weeks. Because when I went to ultrasound I found out I'm having twins! They said I needed to come in biweekly for ultrasounds right now so they can monitor one of the babies low heart rate. I want going to tell until I was showing but that plan went out the window lol. I figure my babies health was worth more than the job. And if I get fired. oh well it was gods plan.
