For our son's first birthday we only wanted it to be us as a family. We went to the zoo, went to dinner and he had his first bit of ice cream. It was just 3, I wouldn't have it any other way.

For my daughters first, we had a few close family come by for dinner and a little party a week before (because of scheduling conflicts). On her actual birthday her daddy was working so I just took her out shopping to target and bought her sooo many toys lol 
Then her day care teachers combined their 10 year opening celebration with her party and that was cool. Finally I did a mini photostoot  sesh at the park  with her :) it was like a full week of little celebrations

I would not go to Bali. I don't know any adult who had gone to Bali and not caught Bali Belly. I sure wouldn't want my 1 yr old to get sick over there. There's only one hospital that meets international standards and that's in nusa dua. At 1 yr old they're still putting things in their mouth, and it's pretty hard to to tell them not to swallow bath or pool water. They wouldn't be fully vaccinated for hep A or measles by then and they are both common in Bali

Just do whatever you all think is best. For our daughter's first birthday, we are giving her a HUGE party at a rental venue. Neither my husband or myself have family here, but they do not live that far (my family is three hours away and my husband's family is two hours away) so they will definitely be here. She's having an African Princess Theme Party. We're taking her to Disney World a month later.
