Is taking an iron supplement safe?

I was at the ER yesterday and found out that i am anemic... the doctor didn’t really talk to me about it but i wanted to see if it was safe to take an iron supplement (asking OB as well but waiting for a call back) I’m 29 weeks 2 days!

They’re safe, but you need to talk to your OB about dosage and what kind. Most pregnant women need between 20-30mg of iron a day, but if you’re anemic you’ll need more. Also sometimes there is iron in prenatal vitamins, but most prenatals also contain calcium and magnesium, which actually inhibit the body’s absorption of iron. If your prenatal has iron, magnesium, and calcium you may want to switch to a different prenatal. Most gummy prenatals don’t include iron, but there are others that don’t either so that might be something to look into. That way you can take an iron supplement individually (make sure you take it several hours before or after your prenatal) to make sure you get the full absorption.
