Unexpected Labor & Delivery
I was diagnosed with gestational diabetes at 20 weeks and pregnancy induced hypertension around 30 weeks, so I was monitored very closely throughout pregnancy and was expecting to be induced at 39 weeks. I had just had an appointment with my OB on Friday when I was 36 weeks and 6 days. She did the strep B test and checked my cervix which she saif was still closed and high. I wasn't surprised because I expected baby to stay pur until I was to be induced at 39 weeks. That Saturday night my hubby and I went to my friend's son's birthday party and was a little uncomfortable so we left early and went home around 7. I told hubby that it felt like there was something stuck in my vajayjay, almost like a bubble. I didn't think anything of it and we went to bed. He got up and went to work around 5am and I kept slepping. I got up around 10am to pee then came back to bed got comfy and was just about to fall asleep when I felt a pop and a gush of fluid come out of me and knew right away it was my water (that must have been the bubble I felt that night). I called hubby and had to wait for him to come home. I called the nurse and they wanted me to come in to labor & delivery right away. As I waited for hubby the contractions started (about 15 min to 30 min after water broke). At labor and delivery they confirmed it was my waters that broke and admitted me at 11:30am. I only made it to 3 cm dilated before I asked for an epidural. The first attempt at an epidural did not work. I had absolutely no pain relief whatsoever and the contractions were HORRIBLE! The doc came to check my cervix after the fail epidural attempt and it was the most excruciating pain of my life! I was having a contraction as she was checking my cervix and it was awful! After she finished rhey called the anesthesiologist back to redo the whole process of the epidural and I finally had total pain relief. At about 3am on Monday morning the epidural started to wear off on one side and they tried everything to get it working again but with no luck. The anesthesiologist told me she knew the epidural was in the correct spot but just wasn't working anymore and that redoing it again would not help. So I had to endure the rest of my labor and delivery with no pain relief. The contractions increased in intensity and came faster and faster. It was finally time to push at 4:30am. Pushing through the contractions actually felt good compared to just laying there waiting for them to come and go. At 7:00am they called in the team to deliver. They had me stop pushing until the doc came in and as she was gowning up I was getting another contraction and asked if I could push. They gave me the okay and I pushed my baby boy out beforw the doc was even ready, one of the nurses caught him at the last second. He was finally here and I had instant pain relief! I didn't feel the delivery of the placenta or rhe stitches being put in because I was in pure bliss with my baby boy finally in my arms. I cried, hubby cried, hubby cut the cord and now we have our little Levi Ray Travers. Recovery wasn't bad, the hospital stay sucked. We're all happy and healthy and home.
