August baby became a July baby

Wendy

Warning: very long post!

From 28 weeks we were having growth scans to monitor my little boy. 28 week scan comes and goes and everything is fine. By the time it came for the 31 week scan his growth had significantly reduced. From this point we were having weekly scans to make sure he was getting adequate blood supply etc and to monitor the growth even more closely. If needs be to induce me early. This was not something they were comfortable with until I was 37 weeks but would be willing to do at 34 if there was a real risk of him not making it. 35 weeks came and his growth had dropped even further so I was booked in to be induced at 37 weeks.

So the day came to be induced and as I was only 37 weeks I was told that most likely it would take a few days and to bring plenty of things to keep me entertained as I would be in hospital the entire time. With this knowledge I downloaded a few box sets and some films for my hubby and I to watch on the first day (he was planning on going to work on the second day if nothing was happening). Within 2 hours of the pessary going in (1:30pm) I was having contractions (kind of like severe period pains). Most of the midwives were shocked it was happening so quickly. I was just excited. This excitement lasted another hour or two when it felt like I had been hit by a truck. The contractions felt like a constant stabbing pain and there was absolutely no let up. My blood pressure by this point was sky rocketing,my vision became blurry and couldn’t eat a damn thing without bringing it back up again (sorry for the visual). They started to treat me for preeclampsia as a precaution (6:00pm). From this point on they had me linked up to the monitor to make sure my little boy was ok and he wasn’t in distress (unlike his mum who had seen better days). Visiting hours finished on the ward I was on 8pm so husband didn’t know whether to go or not. Luckily midwives didn’t tell him to leave because by 9:30pm my boys heart rate kept dropping and he was now showing signs of distress. We were then rushed down to the labour ward where we had a grand total of 15 minutes before being told that I was only 1cm dilated and his heart rate was just plummeting. Off to theatre we go and at 10:33pm on the 24th July my amazing 4lbs 14oz little fighter came out.

He was blue due to fluid on his lungs, jaundice, and had various other health issues which required him to be in an incubator for the first 4 days of his life but he is absolutely amazing with a very stubborn streak already. Still can’t believe he is here and trying to work out how my hubby and I created something so beautiful.
