Should there be legal marriages anymore ? Should it be a contract?

I was thinking how with marriage in other countries they don't do legal paperwork at all. The couple states they are married and that is how it goes. Of the couple wants to divorce they will just separate no alimony, no child support, no custody battles. They deal with it amongst themselves no government involved. 
If your country does legal marriage do you think that should change ? Should legal marriage be a contract ?

I think it’s fine that the state is involved. There are benefits for things such as filing taxes and inheritance of death benefits or property upon a spouse’s death.

The government originally got involved in marriage to regulate it and incentivize it because generally speaking, marriage is good for society and tends to protect women. But since their involvement, the appeal for marriage has not increased, and if I'm not mistaken, marriage rates are at an all time low in the U.S. 
I think marriage should be privatized. So two consenting adults could write out their own legal contract on their legal terms. The contract can state how assets would be divided in the event of a broken contract, death, or other such events, and perhaps even set guidelines for custody agreements. 
The actual marriage part should be a ceremony however the married party chooses, whether it's in their church, synagogue, or whatever their place of belief is. That's it.

Not having any legal rights would concern me because if your partner becomes unconscious and doesn’t have a living will, you might not have a right to visit them or make medical decisions for them. If they pass away unexpectedly, who’s to keep one of their relatives from taking your inheritance because you aren’t considered family?

I think there should be choices. People can do a ceremony or legal paperwork along with it. I personally don't want a contract. I'll take the ceremony, but that's it.

If there was no legal/contract aspect to it it would become like changing your relationship on Facebook haha
And imagine immigration if you could just be married to anyone... *visa runs out* oh I'm married now so I'll be staying!

I think that we should do away with all tax benefits for marriage. I have a certificate of domestic partnership with my SO, which we file annually with our state so that he can be on my healthcare plan. That, or something similar, should be it. There is no reason for the government to be involved in my or anyone else’s relationship.

id rather the state is involved... keeps everything legally clear (mostly)... so heaven forbid anything happent o my husband Loosy Lucy cant go claim his life insurance policy by just saying shes married to him...
