question about checks

so my husband's check goes in the bank overnight tonight. we have no money right now but we have personal checks. I need to get a couple things tonight for dinner and I was wondering if it would be okay to write a check at the grocery store or if it would bounce? I have never felt with checks before so I have no clue.
