How much formula to give while supplementing a 3 month old EBF baby? Not producing enough, but still plan to breastfeed as much as possible. Trying to build supply.

He isn’t gaining proper weight.
Not sure how much he was taking due to EBF and no pumping.
Anyone have any advice?

That’s a tough one. The more you supplement with formula, the less breastmilk you will make. I would pump every time you offer a bottle if you want to try to keep your supply.

Personally I’d pump and supplement with my own supply. Pumping regularly will help increase your supply & you’ll be able to see how much baby is drinking. Without all the hassle of find a formula that baby can tolerate.

I’d maybe do no more than an ounce or two at a time and keep making small batches of formula if needed, rather than wasting it. But I’d also do paced feeding to prevent over feeding.

Feed from both breast and then give a 2-3 oz bottle. If he still seems hungry increase by 1oz at the next feed until you find a sweet spot. I have also read you can do bottle, breast, bottle because that can encourage better breastfeeds but i did not try it that way so im not sure if its better or not.

I would really go see a lactation specialist, they can tell you exactly how much a baby around the size of your little one should be eating at every feeding. They can have you feed your little one there and weigh them after feeding off of both sides to see exactly how much you are producing. Then they can direct you on how much to supplement with. I had to do the same thing with my little one until my supply fully came in and it was a huge help for me.

Pump more and you’ll produce more. Mixing BF and formula isnt usually recommended. Get help from a specialist or voluntary group if you’re worried you’re not producing enough. The more you pump or BF the more milk you will produce. Babies do need feeding very regularly but they don’t actively feed a lot of that time and they only need quite small quantities of breast milk each time as it’s so concentrated. There are some charts available online which show you how much breast milk they need at each age. I was shocked by just how tiny the amount is. You might be producing enough but it doesn’t look like enough as only about 2% of mothers cant produce enough milk. Obviously you could be in this 2% but it’s not likely and it might just be that you’re worrying when you’re fine or maybe trying to encourage more milk production will do the trick. It’d definitely worth asking an expert for some advice and giving pumping or more regularly feeding a try if you’re not already. Congrats on the baby! :) x

I’d start with maybe a 4 ounce bottle, see how much of it he will take. He’ll stop when he’s not hungry anymore, it’s very hard to overfeed a baby. Then, depending how much he drinks of that 4 ounces you can estimate how much he’ll need with each feeding.
