Need some help

So I am starting university next week and the drive is about 45min away from where I live. I need to drive on the highway/freeway to get there but I have never driven on the highway. I was wondering how you guys did your first time and if you had practice or just winged it. I have class at night 2x a week and my boyfriend wants to take me because he doesn't want me driving on my own. I don't see the point in wasting so much gas and I will be having class in different areas of town so I really don't want to have to wait for my bf ti pick me up of I get out early. Any advice on driving on the highway?
