Breastfeeding with inverted nipples

I’ve been using a nipple shield to breastfeed because that is what they gave me in the hospital because I have inverted nipples. I’ve been reading and with the nipple shield the baby isn’t getting a deep enough latch and my nipples feel like they’re about to fall off. It is to the point that I cry every time she feeds. How can I or is it even possible for her to latch without the shield and will it stop hurting if I attempt to breastfeed without the shield? Please help!
