Has anyone ever had success telling a guy your friends that you actually want to be more than friends?

I’ve been friends with this guy for years and I like him and I’m kinda at a loss of what to do.

My partner and I were friends before we got together. I didn’t come straight out and say ‘I want to be more than friends’ though. I jokingly commented that there was hope for us yet, that he needed a wife like me to straighten him out, that our kids would be perfect so long as they didn’t get my coordination and his big head. I would touch his arm when we were together and flirt with him. 
Then things started when I told him a guy I dated wanted to get back together. He got upset because this guy was an arsehole and really messed me up. My partner told me ‘I don’t want anyone to ever hurt you. You deserve more than that. I would never do what he did to you etc etc’ 
We caught up to chat 2 days later and have been together ever since. We are coming up to 2 years together. He’s my forever person. 
If you decide to try test the waters, don’t do it in a way that could ruin the friendship if your friends doesn’t return the feelings.

Every guy friend I’ve admitted feelings for have rejected me haha. So I’ve got no success story. Lol. But I’m engaged now with two kids so it worked out well anyway lol.
