Home birth on accident

Violet’s Birth story

This was my second birth and let me preface by saying I was 41+5 weeks and labored at home for 36 hours and then another 6 hrs at the hospital with my first child... all back labor and I ended up getting an epidural once I got to the hospital and she was 8lbs 5oz

Well second baby girl was measuring 8lbs at our 37 week sonogram and dr was worried I might need a c-section. I really did not want that. So at 39 weeks I researched natural ways to induce labor... and I did most of it. Raspberry leaf tea, evening primrose oil, pineapple, spicy foods, etc... then I found the “midwife’s brew”. I decided to do it. So 2 days before my due date I drank the brew at 7pm. My husband and I watched a show and I was feeling what I thought was Braxton Hicks... but nothing consistent. He went to sleep at 10pm and I told him to “get ready because we were having this baby tonight!”

I jumped in the shower around 11pm and was pretty sure I was having contractions but they were really close together... which felt funny since I really felt they had just started. After my shower I started picking up around the house and had to stop because I started have back labor and couldn’t stand during the contractions anymore... This was around 12:15am. I got on the toilet backwards with a pillow on the tank... it was the only way I could shake off the back labor and relax through the contractions. Then I had to get a sparkling water and some crackers because I felt like I was about to throw up! I was having cold sweats and shaking and thought, “how am I so weak! I did this for 36 hrs with my first and it’s only been 1hr 45min at this point! I can’t do this for another 10 hrs!!!”

I woke my husband up and told him we needed to call his parents to come over and stay with our little girl so we could head to the hospital. He started putting my last min things in my hospital bag and then my water broke (another bonus of laboring over the toilet). It’s 1:15am at this point and I tell him we have got to go! His dad got there a 10 min later and I couldn’t walk during the next few contractions. After I could walk we were steps away from the car outside and another contraction hit me! I felt like I peed my pants and had to use the restroom! I said “I can’t get in the car! I can’t get in the car... I have to go back inside!” I went back inside to my bathroom and had another contraction and didn’t know what was going on! I had the intense urge to push and called for my husband. I said something wasn’t right and reached down and could feel baby crowning. I must have had a look of shock on my face and my husband asked if he should call 911. I said YES! He dialed and told the operator what was going on. She asked where I was and he said over the toilet. She told us to try to lie down and get clean towels. I said “I can’t move! I can’t move. I’m not moving!” And then I had a contraction and pushed her head out in one push! My husband told her and she told him to catch the baby and to not let her head hit. I had another contraction and pushed her out and he caught her. It’s now 1:45am. My husband was so calm through the entire thing and was amazing. His father came in with the towels and we couldn’t tell if she was breathing... I started speaking to her, praying, trying to clear her airway and spank her rear to make her cry. That was the scariest moment. She started breathing a little bit. Next thing I know there is a policeman standing next to me in the bathroom. He asked if he can take her and holds her face down and we hear her cough and gives her back to me. Then all of a sudden, there were 3 paramedics in the bathroom. One of them flicks the bottom of her foot with his fingers and she wails... best sound ever. Our hearts were at peace then!

While they are checking me and the baby, I deliver the placenta and they let my husband cut the cord.

They then help me walk to the gurney in my living room and strap me and my baby on. As they are wheeling us down the front walk of our house I tell my husband, “Take a picture! We need proof of this”!

We then get in the ambulance, make it to the hospital and into a delivery room. My dr comes in and I said, “I didn’t need a c-section!” and she said, “You sure didn’t”!

They weighed our little baby and she was 9lbs 5oz and 21 1/2” long. So thankful for our Violet and cant wait to see how she will keep us on our toes in the future.
