You tend to see the heartbeat before you hear it. For example if you have an early scan at 6-8 weeks you can sometimes see the heartbeat on the screen, but they don’t often play the audio. I don’t know if this is because it’s too early to pick up sounds or not. 
Then at your 16 week midwife appt (in he UK anyway) you get to hear it with a Doppler more often than not, without a scan. 
If you have an early scan you can always ask and see?

At 7weeks 6days during my first ultrasound. We didnt use the fetal doppler though.

We got to see the heart beating at 7 weeks and heard it at 11 weeks

Saw the heartbeat on ultrasound at 7 weeks, heard it just the other day with a Doppler at the doctor's at 9w6d.

Got to see the heartbeat for the first time at 7w4d and heard it at 13 weeks. My OB uses the doppler at every follow up appt.

I had a scan at 8+4 and we could see the heartbeat. I asked if we could hear it, and the doctor said “At this stage? Really not necessary to get out the fetal doppler. We’ve seen it, that’s enough.” Germans do tend to be conservative and won’t do tests they deem unnecessary. 🤷‍♀️
