people's view on replacing engagement rings?

so if you get engaged at a time on you're life where you can only afford a $50 or whatever ring..... then fast foreward a few years and you can afford to get a new one.... ready for the wedding maybe? a nicer maybe more expensive one?? or maybe the old one was a little worn or tarnished??? 
what are people's views on this?? do you think it would be ok? or do you think women should just be happy with the first ring they get?

There is nothing wrong with a ring upgrade. As long as you can afford it now and you're not pressuring your man to spend cash he doesn't have, I don't see a problem

I wouldn't want an upgrade personally. The ring I have is very nice already, plus it's so special since it's the one he proposed with. Any other would just be a diamond ring.

Nah. Mine holds meaning of our engagement, it’s more than a flashy fashion accessory to me. Maybe if it got thin and worn I would get it professionally polished or altered to be thicker, but never replace it.
When I was 6 my mothers engagement ring was stolen from our house (along with lots of other expensive goods). Insurance got her a new set which is much larger and flashier compared to the ring I see in old photos of her. This ring suits her current style and countless other flashy rings she wears, but I know she’d much rather have the ring my dad proposed to her with than a meaningless replacement.

My husband always talks about an upgrade. Mainly bc it's what his dad did every 10 years. 
I dont really want it but it seems important to him. So I figured ehhh maybe.. itd give me enough sets to pass on to my sons if they want or melt down to earrings/pendant for our soon to be here daughter down the road.
Still undecided. 
I dont see anything wrong with upgrading, especially if vow renewal, 10,15,20year kinda mark... or if was super cheap/not what was wanted but worked for the time. 
But for me it's just not important.

we are currently talking about replacing mine... 
it's a gorgeous beautiful ring but unfortunately it's silver  (i dontcare about this or the expense or anything) 
i take really good care of it, don't wash my hands with it on, polish it with a clean cloth, never shower or sleep in it.... and yet it's tarnished all on the sides and bottom.... so before we get married we will replace it.... 
but i just want to find the EXACT same ring just in any material that won't tarnish!!! but it's proving hard to find one that's exactly the same 😞

I joked with my ex husband that since we were super young when we got engaged and my ring was small that I wanted a HUGE ROCK at our 10 year anniversary. And I got it! We divorced shortly after so I gave it back but when I had it, I wore both the old one and the new one.
