Use of cepacol throat lozenges during pregnancy
I've been very sick lately. My throat has been so sore that it's been difficult to eat or even drink water. My husband suggested cepacol lozenges, which I agreed to. They contain an active ingredient called benzocaine. According to the FDA, this is a class C medication for pregnant women. This means that benzocaine has not had sufficient testing in humans but has possibly shown birth defects when used on pregnant animals. I've taken one and my throat felt so much better. I was able to eat an actual meal and drink an entire bottle of water without the extreme pain I've been experiencing. The FDA website says that class C medications can be used during pregnancy if the benefits outweigh the risks. I think I've benefited a lot with them but I still can't help but feel bad for taking them. What do you ladies think? What would you have done in this situation?
