Breast milk donation?

Question

I’ve been thinking of donating my breast milk to the hospital since I pump a lot and got a lot more than my daughter need. Do any moms know if where will the milk go after I donate it? Will they send the milk to the babies who needed it? Or they’ll keep it for research? If you know or have done this or have information about this please share. Thank you in advance

I joined Human Milk for Human Babies HMHB facebook page for my state amd donate to mamas and babies through there. I've donated 1,000+ ounces this way. Not too sure about the regulations they have for donating to hospitals though.

You'll have to look into it at your hospital. Every one is different. I'd look into the human milk for human babies Facebook page for your area. Hospitals also require a lot of testing so they probably wouldn't accept milk pumped previous to the tests. They're also (or at least mine is) extremely strict about what they take. They might not take anything if you've had caffeine or taken Tylenol for a headache or fenugreek to boost your supply. They also might charge (a lot!) to the families to get the milk. Human milk for human babies is an easier way to connect directly with mamas in need. You could even make a friend (for yourself and your LO) ☺

To donate for a hospital you will have to do some testing. Usually they require blood tests ahead of time and notes from your obgyn. Just their screening process to make sure you are in good health and free of drugs and such. They'll also test your milk to make sure it's not diluted or anything. Some of them also require the milk be frozen in certain increments.

Look into the policies for milk donation. Where I live there's a very, very strict policy - you have to undergo a long series of tests and they will come and pick up the freshly pumped milk everyday at an agreed time, but they won't take any frozen milk or milk older than a few hours. That group at facebook the others mentioned or really, any local forum for moms is usually a better option. BUT! Really look into your hospital's policy, because if they do accept it and give it to newborns or preemies in need, that's in my opinion the best use for your extra milk. You are amazing for helping the little ones with donated milk ❤
