Should parents follow their children on social media to monitor their social media activities?

Mo

On my Nextdoor app people are arguing over this currently bc a boy posted an incriminating video on Instagram and his parents didn’t know about it until the police and school administrators notified them.

The most common arguments on the app are:

1. You should follow them on every single social media account they have associated with their name to make sure that they are not posting anything illegal, incriminating, harmful to others, bullying, etc.

2. You don’t have to follow them if you don’t want your own account, but you should ask them to show you their pages regularly. You should get their passwords too for security reasons.

3. You don’t need to follow them. They need their own privacy and they need to make some mistakes on their own.

4. You don’t need to follow them because if you follow them they’ll never post anything “bad” if they know you’ll know about it.

5. You should follow them from a secret account to see their real activities when they don’t think you are watching them.

6. You should only follow them if they have public pages, but if theirs are set to private, leave them be.

Feel free to elaborate on your own feelings.
