Tiny baby Reid, long post

Amy

I’ve been having issues with my blood pressure since around 33 weeks. I spent a week in the hospital, and after the sent my home I was going to the office every week for non stress tests and to the hospital for biophysicals. They told me the baby wasn’t growing, and I would probably have to deliver at 37 or 38 weeks. Sunday when I was 36 weeks I noticed the baby wasn’t moving too much. He was moving, I did the kick counts, but it just wasn’t like usual. I went to bed and waited till the next morning, and I just wasn’t feeling any movement. I called the drs office and left a message, told my husband to leave work cause we probably needed to go to the hospital. I had some breakfast and orange juice to try to wake the baby up. Still nothing, so my husband came and picked me up and we went to the hospital. The hooked me up to the monitors, and it took them a minute to find the heartbeat. I have never been so scared. They finally found it, but it kept dropping. The dr on call came in and said, we needed to get him out, so they said we’re going to do a c section, because trying to induce me would stress his heart too much. They told me I needed to wait till 5, cause it needs to be 8 hours after eating anything for the anesthesia. So I just had to lay there scared and hungry all day. A little before 5 they came in to get me ready, they explained what they were going to do. They took me and my husband down to the or, but they made him wait outside while they gave me the spinal. The anesthesiologist kept telling me to calm down, cause my bp was high. I was pretty calm, I though, considering. Also, telling someone to calm down has never made anyone calm down. Otherwise the staff was great, patient, explained everything as it was happening. I got really lucky there. After the spinal kicked in, they let me husband come back. He sat next to me the whole time, he never looked cause he thought he might pass out. The drape wouldn’t stay up and it kept falling on our heads. I tried to focus on anything but what was happening, so I wouldn’t panic. I heard the nurse say the cord was wrapped around his neck twice, and that was the problem. I never heard him make a sound, they took him out to special care nursery. I told me husband to go with him. The nurse came in a few minutes later and told me he was doing great, he only needed oxygen for like a minute. They gave him an iv, just cause he was so small. He was only 4lbs 6oz and 17in. They closed me up and took me back to my room. My husband came back to show me pictures and tell me how perfect the baby was. I had to wait 5 hours to see him, cause they wouldn’t let me go until the feeling came back in my legs. He only had to stay in the nursery 24 hours to make sure he was going to eat. They kept us 3 days, to make sure he was going to grow. We’re home now and doing good.
