FTM question: is it necessary to have a manual pump as well? I’m planning to BF and also pump.

I have a Hakka pump and a spectra 1, do I have to get another manual pump?

I used a Manual pump (medela hand pump) quite a bit in the beginning to soften the breast before feeding so baby could latch or to just relieve engorgement here and there when needed. The Hakka style I used later once bf was more established.

I loved my manual pump so much!  It’s all I used at home.  I tell all my friends to have one!  It’s only around $25 and I threw it in my diaper bag, had it in my room, on my couch...  I kept the electric one at work.  I say get one! (My friend actually said it was a lifesaver for her and got it for me even though I didn’t ask.  I was too cheap to buy one but MAN did I thank her!!)

My medela electric came with an attachment to make it manual. I do say it's better to have both just in case of an emergency. But I am crazy when it comes to stuff. Like I have an attachment in my car so that I could pump while driving with my bra inserts (I call them eggs, but they are these cups that go over your breasts and fit into any bra). I have pumped in public so many times using my battery powered pump, just walking around lol. I stuck to a very tight pumping schedule 😂.

I’m three weeks postpartum and I’ve used the haakaa like crazy only used my electric like 3 times. But now that my supply is leveling out it really only works if you’re getting a let down or super full in the morning. I have a manual hand pump that makes life a lot easier on the go!! You can wait to buy it though until you see a need.

I have both an electric and manual. They both were great. I used my manual more just because we did lots out where I couldn't plug in and didn't want to sit in the car and miss out.

I’ve got the medela Sonata, which I paid over $500 for, and love, but I’m still planning on getting a manual pump.  
I went to a wedding a few weeks ago, and had to pump halfway through because I kept getting engorged, and having to go out to my truck to use my electric pump was a pain in the ass. A manual one you can just throw in your purse and use anywhere.

I'd recommend it just as a back up at least...my electric was acting funky and the panic I felt was no joke! If my pump goes then I can't be away from her and would have to call out of work and such, I didnt realize how much I depend on pumping!

I have a manual pump for when I need to express more milk at a time than my haakaa will, like if I need to finish off a bottle' s worth at the end of the day. Once I pumped 6 oz. With a haakaa, now I usually get an oz or just a little less. Haakaa at each BF session gets me a bottles worth each day, which is sufficient for us

Yes! I bought the manual after I lost the parts to my electric. I ended up loving using the manual and it was so much easier to bring to work. I actually used the manual pump to do nipple stimulation with my second and it worked!
