Zofran?

Long story short, went to the hospital was extremely nauseous and dehydrated. They gave me zofran after verbally assuring me it was safe even though im 7 weeks and wrote me a prescription for it. However when i got home and did research on it, i got mixed articles saying it increases the chance of certain birth defects. Had anyone else heard of this or have experience using Zofran while pregnant?

There’s a huge law suit against the company for cleft palates and birth defects. I was prescribed, but chose not to take it.

I have taken it and my baby doesn’t have a cleft lip/pallet. My doctor said that the risk is extremely low. Especially if you aren’t taking it every day. 🤷🏼‍♀️

Took it all through my pregnancy, baby turned 1 a few weeks ago, and is as healthy and happy as any normal 1-year-old. Sometimes google isn’t your friend. Personally I feel if the risk were THAT high, it wouldn’t even be an option. I couldn’t live my normal life vomiting every other hour, and being crippled with nausea myself, but you do you!

It’s fine. They wouldn’t give it to you if it wasn’t allowed. It’s low risk.

All the large studies (200k+ participants) have shown it is safe. There was one small study in particular that showed a “statistical significant” increase in a particular heart defect. The study was done with a only a few hundred pregnant women, I believe around 200. They expected 1 child to be born naturally with the heart defect. At the end of the study 2 children had been born with it. This represented a 100% increase, and to such a small study this was viewed as “statistically significant.” However, one additional case could easily have been a fluke and larger follow up studies have not found any significant increase. 
Obviously you can do your own research and do what you think is best.

They recently gave it to me. Last week at 6 weeks. My doctor told me we had to be careful with it. They only gave me enough for 5 days. She decided it was worth the risk since I couldn't even keep down water and was severely dehydrated. It helped and I've finished the prescription and I'm still feeling much better than I was. Keeping food and water down. From what my doctor said you really should only take it if its absolutely necessary. But that's only one doctor's opinion. I obviously dont know for sure any long term effects if any it will have on me as I'm still pregnant. But I do believe it was necessary for me to take. Good luck and I hope you feel better soon!

I took it daily with my first. No issues. Took diclegis with my second. Ask about that one if you’re nervous about zofran.
