I was with my ex for a long time. He was my entire world and I was his. Things got shaky at almost the 3 year mark and we split, mostly because he had been ignoring me and I eventually got fed up with it and cheated on him. 
I'm with a different person now and things are great with him. A few months ago, my ex and I started chatting again and things are going ok. It's just platonic from me but I know he still loves me deeply. It does making being his friend difficult sometimes but I remind him I am taken and am not interested in being with him romantically. 
It honestly depends on the two of you how things go. 
I think that ex-partners can be friends, it just takes some work sometimes.
