Honestly, making a joke like that is not a good look. You are the one who brought up his ex, not him. If he wasn’t over her, you’d most likely know it because he’d talk about her. I’d be mad if a guy made a joke like that towards me. I think you should just accept that you said the wrong thing and apologize for saying it. Just because you think it was a “small joke”, doesn’t mean it couldn’t hurt someone’s feelings. People don’t like it when they feel like they’re not being trusted.
