Stealing for a good reason?

My boyfriend and I stole money from his mother. Hear me out, she has a terrible gambling problem and hasn’t paid her bills in months. She claims she can’t afford it and expects us to pay them for her. My boyfriend went through her handbag and found stacks of cash and realised she’s been lying to us. We stole the money from her to pay for her bills because we couldn’t afford hers let alone ours, it’s been weeks and she hasn’t even realised it went missing but I can’t help but feel like it’s her money and her choices 😓 what do you guys think?

I completely get why he did it (not saying it’s ok or not ok I just understand the thinking process) 
However if she were to press charges she’d have every right. 
Sometimes you have to let people suffer. 
Who knows, she might suddenly find more money in her purse and use that to pay it.

Eh. I'm not generally one to make excuses for unethical behavior. It doesn't matter how you attempt to rationalize it, it is unethical. 
The ethical, ADULT way to handle this is just say to her "We know you're lying and we aren't paying your bills anymore. Pay them yourself or get evicted" then I'd move on with my life.
Since you mentioned you cannot pay your own bills either, I have to ask.. do you feel bad because you used some if her money for your own bills...?

You could have talked to her like adults and not stole the money from her. Its not your job to take care of her, let her ruin her credit, lose her car. Or house. Then she has too start over.
