Tampons??

I have my period but irregularly..  can I try a tampon when not on my period to get used to it will it harm me if I do? Please help and from experience do they hurt I have to wear them instead of pads as I dance

You should absolutely never use a tampon if you’re not on your period

It's best to wait until your period starts to try inserting a tampon, you don't want to use one if you're too dry. A tampon should never hurt. It might feel slightly uncomfortable when you're first trying it out and figuring out how to use them properly, but you should never feel pain.
