Is it rude for a child to open their gifts during their birthday party?
I remember as a child this was a big debate between my classmates/parents/etc.
A lot of parents thought it was rude for a child to open their gifts during their party because it:
• caused jealousy between the children
• felt awkward
• took up a lot of time
• made people feel embarrassed if their gift wasn’t “as good” as another person’s or was “too small”
• embarrassed people who were unable to bring gifts
Others tho said it was fine because:
• it was a good way for the child to show appreciation by thanking each individual as they opened their gift
• was considered to be an important “fun” part of the party for the child
• “the party is about celebrating the child, so why wouldn’t they open their gifts then?”
• at the end many times the kids would play with the party kid’s toys which was fun for a lot of parents to watch (not always fun for the gift recipient tho)
• it’s more fun for the kid to open their gift around others than by themselves
