Crib to toddler bed?

Question

When did you start transitioning your child from a crib to toddler bed?
How do you know they are ready?
How did you get them to sleep in their toddler bed? Was it easy or hard?

When my daughter started to climb out of her crib after naptime, around age 2. She only slept in her crib for naps. Instead of using a toddler bed, we made our own twin sized loft bed for her. She uses it for naps and bedtime now because it has a ladder and it's painted her favorite color. 
Honestly, toddler beds are a rest of money in my mind unless you have a crib that turns into one and you can use for a twin headboard. 
Make sure to grab toddler rails or make them out of those long swimming tubes so you're baby doesn't fall off.

I just set the bed up and he laid in it... never used a crib. Just a pack n play. Slept in the bed the night it was set up and since then. 
It was set up at 13 months

1 year old. I didnt know he was ready my mom bought it for his birthday so i just set it up. He got the idea right away. He got into and off his bed on his own as soon as i finished setting it up so that same day i took down his crib.

Unless my son climbs out of his crib I won’t be putting him in a toddler bed any time soon lol. That dude (1 year) will get up and run around and hurt himself lol.
