Is it really my fault? Am I asking too much?

My ex claims he has a fear of commitment. He doesn’t want labels. He told me to act like his girlfriend and I’ll become it (he broke up with me after a year of dating). Anyways, he told me I always try to put labels on it which freaks him out so he gets pushed away. I feel like if I do what he says and go with the flow and act like his girlfriend without the labels, months will go by and I’ll still be doing the same thing and end up hurt. What’s the difference between being together and acting like you’re together? I don’t understand why he doesn’t want it. Especially when he’s the one who broke up with me because he wanted to be single and came back and told me he wanted me. What should I do? Is it my fault? He claims it is because I won’t act like it without being it for now. He say he’s not going to date anyone else
