When would be the best time to get an epidural?

Like how far dialated so that the medicine will still work so you wont feel the baby coming out?

I think i got mine after they realized i had been contracting all day. Back story, i had already been in the hospital for 4 days on magnesium and what i was feeling after they took me off magnesium, they had told me was probably gas pains. A side effect of the magnesium. Didnt bother checking. My night nurse came in and put the monitor on me and saw i was contracting, and about an hour later or so, i was getting my epidural.

I had to have a pre-meeting with an anesthesiologist in the unit due to medical issues and he advised me the sooner you do it, the safer it is because you’re less in pain and straining, so they have a better shot at getting the injection in. The downside being that you’re less mobile then

I wasn’t very dilated I got it as soon as I felt the 2nd contraction. I would say when you decide the pain is too much and maybe need help relaxing.

I got mine at 4cm. I was stuck there for three days. Then I got my epidural and went to 10cm in 45 minutes. It helped relax me.
