Oversupply?

I have a 1 week old and I am exclusively breastfeeding. I think I may have an oversupply of breastmilk, as I soak through a wash cloth every two hours, my baby seems very gassy and has been spitting up large amounts. She has bright yellow stringy/seedy poops. Is pumping a good way to handle this or will that increase my milk supply? I dont want to risk decreasing my supply in the event I end up not making enough for baby.

This is so normal in the beginning before your supply regulates. A Haaka is a good tool to catch milk without increasing supply. I would avoid pumping at this point as much as you can as it will tel your body to produce more milk. I kept preemie diapers in my bra for ages, it seemed like, before my supply regulated.

Pumping is great! It’s a great way to start a freezer supply. At first your supply is regulated by your hormone levels and then once regulated (around 12 weeks) it’s based on supply and demand so as long as baby nurses you’ll have enough to give.

I personally wouldn't pump. That will increase demand which will just increase supply. 
I personally would hand express to take the pressure off and then you can nurse. 
As long as baby is nursing you are not going to stop making milk for your. You'll notice in the next little while that your breasts reduce in size a bit, or your milk flow slows down.....that doesn't mean you're not making enough, just means you're making the right amount for her.

I have the same problem! Daughter is 5 days old. I had it with my first born too. 
I massage my breast before feeding to make it easier for her to drink and after feeding I cool them. Once a day I pump my breasts completely directly after feeding. It is slowly getting better now.

Pump the breast for a few minutes before feeding him and see if that helps. You may have a very forceful letdown that is too much for him right now, but if you pump first it will relieve some and hopefully the next let down won’t be as forceful. If you want to keep your supply up then pump between feeding. If you want to decrease your supply then don’t pump as much and hand express a little if you feel too engorged. It’s usually about supply and demand so if you don’t demand it your body will start making less.

Get a haaka manual breast pump and right when you feel your let down, latch the pump on and it'll fill up with all your heaviest flow milk and then you can relatch baby.
Thats what I've seen majority of women with oversupplys do, then you also get to save the milk for your freezer stash without actually pumping. They say if you don't overstimulate yourself, by 6 weeks it should even out. I'm not quite sure how true that is though.

It may be something you’re eating that could be making her a little gassy. Maybe try cutting dairy for a few days to see if that helps. Make sure to burp her good after each feeding. The poops are normal. It may not be an oversupply. Could just be a simple change in diet. I wouldn’t pump just in case because you’ll produce even more. Maybe go to a lactation consultant too!

I had an over supply and pumped to deal with it. I had plenty of milk for him when my 12 weeks of maternity leave was over and he went to daycare. I'd rather have more milk and be uncomfortable than not enough. Plus now I have so much I can donate my extra milk!

Pumping will increase supply!! Don’t. Until after 6 or so weeks. As long as you can wait!

Look up cottermans hold or reverse pressure softening, pumping too much too early can give you an oversupply, and that’s absolutely no fun.
