How do you explain a miscarriage to children?

We are not religious, so please keep that in consideration.

So this is how i explained it to my 10 yr old sister.  We have a garden and used that as an example. 
I said : Do you remember when we were first trying to grow Cilantro and we would give it everything it needs. Water, light, love. It would start growing for a few days and then we would wake up and it was gone? Well, my baby was like a seed. It was tiny and growing. It was building all the body parts to be a human. One day my seed stopped growing.  It didnt matter that we did everything right. So we are going to keep trying so that a little seed becomes a baby.
She understood and she was sad but was is glad that we are going to keep trying because eventually we figured out how to grow our Cilantro. :)

I hope this isn’t too blunt, but i believe my bil told my nephew (he was 10 at the time) that my baby died.  We tend not to sugarcoat things in my family.  He was old/mature enough to understand.
